CREATING A 3D CAMERA FOR MATCH MODELLING TO A 2D IMAGE
For years I have used Sketchup for 3D modelling.

One of the main things I used Sketchup for a lot was its ability to ‘match model’ in 3D within the context of a 2D image. It did this by analysis of converging parallels and vanishing points in a 2D image to create a 3D camera equivalent to the one which took the 2D photo.

I’m doing much less of this now and Sketchup Pro is getting costly so I have been looking at alternatives.

I have just discovered fSpy. This is a free (or contribution if you think it’s worth it) app that does exactly the same thing. It’s not a 3D app. It’s just a simple analysis tool that can create a 3D camera to match a 2D image using the same technique of vanishing point analysis.

If you use Blender you can download a free plugin that will automatically create the camera from an fSpy camera file. Otherwise fSpy will display on screen all the necessary coordinates and other info to create the camera manually by typing them into your modelling app.

There is a little bit of a learning curve and you need to do a bit of searching to find the best tutorials but if match modelling 3D in a 2D image is of interest to you it’s worth a look.
