HotChiPs virtual meet-up
Since we're all housebound for the foreseeable future, I though it might be a good idea to set up an online video chat using the Zoom platform.

I've settled on 8pm in the UK, which is 9pm for DavidMac, 1pm for Sara, 3pm for Loyd, 7am for Anna and 5pm for Frank. 6am for Ben Boardman, I'm afraid. Sorry Ben. This might even be the chance for us all to get together - both Michaels, Ben Mills, you're included in this! As well as any other occasional regulars - Tom, dwindt, hope you can join in.

I tried adding a poll but it only allows you to click one option, so can you say if there are any days next week (Monday 31st March to Thursday 2nd April) that you can't manage?

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
What an excellent idea. I can make any day next week as I don't seem to have anything on my calendar at the moment

Who is getting in the first round of beers?

Don't worry about the time for me. I haven't the means to participate, no camera, no microphone, no Skype, etc. Have fun everyone.

I know zilch about zoom but I am sure it must exist for your phone. Might that be an option?

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
Following my reply to Loyd I have downloaded Zoom which appears to be completely lacking in any guidance as to how to use it. Study time tomorrow.

That side dates and time are fine. Like Gordon, I don't seem to have any pressing engagements at present ....................

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
Zoom is quite easy to use ..... when you know how. There are some instructional videos on how to install, register and use it when you set it up.

Basically install then register and set up an ID tied to your email address and sign in. When you get an invitation to join a conference you will receive a code which you paste into Zoom and off you go. It’s rather like a glorified Skype.

Haven’t checked if there is a smart phone version but it appears to be available for iPad so ...

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
I don't think you even need to register - you just click the link on the email I'll send out.

It is available on the phone, but you can only see the person who's talking and not everyone else. Much better on the iPad or computer.

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
I'm sorry for not being more specific. I do not have an iPad, laptop, or a smartphone.... I use a 15 year old 'flip-phone'...

Thanks to all of you who have tried to help me.... it would appear that I am beyond help...

Hmmm. I've done all the biz and registered. Set up screen, microphone, etc. When I start the zoom app I get a dialogue offering me New Meeting, Join, Schedule, Share screen. I can close this screen and Zoom stays active in the background with a little camera icon in the taskbar. This has a drop down offering the same options. So far so good. I am unclear as what next.

I am presuming that Steve initiates the meet by scheduling it and informs us in advance by mail, or whatever, of the time. Presumably, as long as we have the app running at that time, we receive a video or audio alert and click join. What I don't understand is how Steve finds me on Zoom to include me and sound the alert - I don't appear to have a zoom 'address'.

I tried watching the tutorial but the young girl has such a strong accent and such slurred diction that she might as well be speaking Chinese for all I can understand it.

Sad old man ..........

I am sure you must be able to join by audio alone. The setup seems to offer separate audio and video.

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
Have you actually used this yet Steve? I am curious as to how the video works. Do we get a mosaic of all the 'conferencers' or does it use the audio channel to switch to whoever is speaking?

Re: HotChiPs virtual meet-up
I set it up on my wife's iPad a few days ago so that she can "attend" her yoga class and also play bridge.

The host sets up the meeting and you will receive a code to copy and paste into Zoom. You then wait for the host to go online and the session should start automatically.

As Steve said, he will post a link that you can click on if you do not have Zoom installed. I haven't tried that method so I cannot say how that will work but i don't foresee a problem.

Sylvia's link on the iPad for her yoga session worked perfectly and I mirrored it through to the Smart TV so that she could see what her instructor was doing and saying on a bigger screen. I learned later that, for some reason, the instructor could not hear Sylvia but I think that was a microphone setting on her iPad causing that problem.

I used Zoom with four friends the other day, and it worked perfectly. You see everyone's video feed, and a blue outline appears around the one who's currently speaking. You can also hear everyone. It's rather like being in the room with them.

Great! So it seems I am all set up and ready to go then.

I don't have a webcam either. I use a tower PC and my mobile phone is rubbish.

I take it you mean Monday 30th. That has just become unavailable for me. Sorry. The other days are all fine at present.
