Announcing… Pocket Photoshop: Smart Objects

I'm pleased to announce the availability of my new virtual book, Smart Objects. It's the first volume in what I hope will become the Pocket Photoshop series, which is intended to take very specific areas of Photoshop and explore them in more detail than could be gone into in a single chapter in a more general book.

Pocket Photoshop: Smart Objects is currently available from Apple's iBooks store, for iPad and Mac OS 10.9 only. I'm aware that this is very limiting, and if there's enough interest I'll also produce an Android version in the near future.

Find out more on the book's dedicated website PocketPhotoshop.net, and if you like the book, please leave reviews on the iBooks store in your country!

Another pre-christmas pressie to myself ... goodie.

Looking at your intro page ... another plus I can see of the self-published iBook is that it can be updated at any time.

Mmmm so you didn't paint the Mona Lisa then

Indeed yes, the ability to update is a real bonus. So look out for mistakes! And I have to admit that Mona wasn't one of mine... but well done reading all the way through the FAQ!

I like the way the individual steps work as sub-pages. It makes navigation of the book a breeze and then you can step down to more detail when needed.

Great idea and well executed ... thanks Steve.

Steve

I just finished working my way through this. Very quick and easy. Short concise explanations. I have used smart objects extensively for a long time now - largely as a means of keeping huge complex images less memory intensive by compressing multiple layers into single smart objects.

However you have opened my eyes to a range of uses particularly where distortions are concerned. I am in the process of applying huge numbers of flat photographed textures to perspective surfaces in a very complex image. Following your can label tutorial I produced a smart object regular grid which I use to conform to the surface first and then add and fine tune the texture layer within the smart object. I have also found that using this technique I can often apply a texture to multiple objects in one action as per your gallery tutorial. I cannot tell you how much easier you have made my workflow.

One of the best Photoshop book investments I ever made .... after "How to Cheat" of course ....

Thank you so much!

I desperately want to buy your Illustrator book too but as a Belgian resident Apple won't let me buy from the UK or US store and it isn't available in Belgium's iBook store. Does anybody publish it in print?

Well, thanks David - glad you found the book useful!

Er... I don't have an Illustrator book. Where did you read that?

I think maybe he means your 100% photoshop book?

Thanks for troubling to reply Steve. How very kind of you.

I found "your" Illustrator book in the Apple store.

Here - under "More by Steve Caplin":

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/book/id758372120?mt=11&affId=1736887

and here where that links to:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/book/macuser-guide-to-adobe-illustrator/id447601834?mt=11

It would seem you have accomplishments of which you are unaware.

If I may ask one more question - I think your 3D Photoshop is written for CC. Is it useful to a CS6X user or has CC moved on too much further for it to be relevant?

Aha! That's interesting. I write a regular column for MacUser magazine, and have done for many years, in which I discuss issues of interest to digital designers. It looks like they've collected a group of features about Illustrator and compiled them into book form. This is the first I've heard of it!

As to your second question: the 3D Photoshop book is indeed written with CC in mind. About 95% of it will be relevant to readers with CS6, although a few interface changes will mean some techniques will look a little different.

If you have Photoshop CS5, though, I think you'll find that too much has changed between the two versions.

Thank you Steve. You have just made a sale. I am a CS6X user. I only keep CS5 on board for certain 32 bit plugins I don't want to lose.
