Re: Banner designs
Artwel, Some do link to other sites, but if they are much larger than Steve's parameters(?) he has an issue for the greater community accessing each page with overhead downloading. Some/many have problem with data download limits. Have a chat with Steve or James. Its probably more relaxed now, but still an issue according to my understanding. Trevor

SJef, I was just staring at the HTCIP homepage, then noticed your banner shimmering, for a second I thought I was hallucinating subtle, I like it. _________________ Quote of the day.. "Photoshop isn't really meant to be used for drawing".. |

Re: Banner designs
The problem is that the banner is downloaded as soon as anyone visits the site, so I try to keep it small for those on slow connections. That said, I have allowed larger sizes for animations on an occasional basis - such as James's work, for instance - but I do like to keep it within reason. What sort of size were you hoping for? |

Re: Banner designs
Thanks Steve, I'm not sure yet. I suppose it's a challenge in itself to keep an animated banner under 100kb. But if that is the limit how would I upload a larger file? I shall see what size I get and let you know. _________________ Quote of the day.. "Photoshop isn't really meant to be used for drawing".. |

Re: Banner designs
I think the key to making an effective animated banner is to keep the animation subtle - like James's this week, or Sjef's last week. They can catch your eye, but you don't want them to be a constant distraction. Many forum users use Photobucket to host images larger than 100K, and that works for banners as well. |

Re: Banner designs
Quit right Steve (distraction) and so does my banner that looks somewhat like a kind of rubber eraser that is jumping from left to right (see above). I can imagine you won't use this banner. I think I'd be a little hampered by a banner like this myself. |

Re: Banner designs
Well, I'm not sure - I think it would be better if the rotation were slower and not so obtrusive? The thing I really like about your last one - and James's banner this week - is the subtlety, the fact that you don't notice the animation for a while. Do you feel like having another go at it? |

Re: Banner designs
Well, using animation lets us struggle between the number of frames, the colors and data limits. A funny challence. That is why I also use other programs to get this animations. I didn't think of the possibility to show the animation just one time. Now the result is what it should have been at first upload. It doesn't show on this page, but it works in my webbrowser-preview (download and drag to webbrowser). |

Re: Banner designs
Here's an example of an animation, made partly in Photoshop, partly in Reflet (an old little program to animate pictures). Frames only 5; Colors only 32. Size: 83 Kb. |

Re: Banner designs
Can you tell why it doesn't work? You uploaded already a few Friday challences, so that doesn't seems to be the trouble. I saw you tried to upload this file: img://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com/cgi-bin/simpleforum_files/attachments/Banničre.jpg Maybe you can try it using this file name: banniere.jpg, without the č and no Capital. Nice avatar by the way! |

Re: Banner designs
Jeepy, Sjef was absolutely right - it was the grave accent that upset the forum software. I've changed the file name (and the name in your last post) and now it works fine. Salut! |
